It has been a busy few days in the screening room…here are my recent favs. . “Loveless” is the follow up to the masterpiece “Leviathan” from Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev. Bleak, deeply emotional, bewildering and at times almost impossible to watch. Another triumph! . “The Other Side of Hope” is the latest from Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki and tells the story of a Syrian refugee seeking asylum in Finland. The minimalist, almost dead pan approach works exceptionally well considering the weight of the material and as usual with his films, is interspersed with cool music and some jaw dropping comedic moments. . “Phantom Thread” is Paul Thomas Anderson’s eighth feature length and the most accessible film he’s done for some time. Set in the rarely seen world of a London couture house in the 1950’s, it deals with relationships, creativity, obsession, routines and is a fascinating look at a man, his routines and the upheaval a new relationship brings. Supposedly, it’s also Daniel Day-Lewis’ last performance before retiring. . Lastly, I just wanna give a shout out to a small film I saw yesterday with Jess and my kids called “The Last Jedi.” It’s a new take on the age-old story of good and evil, conquering and resistance, light and dark set in a galaxy far, far away. You heard it here first!!! This is a movie that may have some serious potential for making waves and crossing into the mainstream!! .
